Learn the Art of Music

There are 3 levels in The Music Train Adventure and in each level, as you travel from station to station, you’ll go on train journeys – playing songs and games along the way. On each journey a friendly conductor will lead you through various train compartments to introduce passengers of all sizes. You’ll meet adults, children, grandparents, sleeping people, luggage and seat reservations.

Have Fun and be Creative

You’ll play songs and learn how to apply different music principles through tapping your feet, counting the beats, clapping your hands, playing percussion instruments, playing melodies, using various instruments such as the glockenspiel, xylophone or piano. All Train rides can be done in your own time. The course will save your progress so you can return at any time to continue your learning.

Meet the Creator

Barbara Swetina

Barbara Swetina is a classically trained professional musician, born in the European music capital of Vienna. As a music loving child, she could listen to a song and then immediately play it on the piano. But having a good ear for music did not help her to develop the ability to ‘sight read’, playing directly from printed music. ‘In spite of all my skills, when it came to reading music I just did not feel good enough and I almost gave up my musical career’, she remembers.

Through fortunate life circumstances Barbara did eventually manage to learn reading music and found that the problem was not HER inability, but the WAY music reading was taught. Through working with home schooled children in Hawaii, wanting them to succeed where she personally failed, Barbara was inspired to create a playful and easy way of understanding music notation, the Music Train Adventure. ‘My sense of failure in my teenage years keeps motivating me, like an explorer, to find a better way for learning and teaching to read music, so that failure would be impossible.

Barbara believes that music is our birth right. Like book literacy is accepted as normal in our world and seen as a sign of culture, music literacy could be normal too, giving everyone a chance to read and play music, and enjoy the immense enrichment to peoples lives that music brings.

A key point of discovery for Barbara was that STRESS of any level prevents a good learning outcome. During times of stress the brain goes into a ‘fight, flight or freeze’ mode, wanting to ensure the survival of the organism. Then there is no bandwidth for learning. PLAY ensures that the students stay out of the stress zone, because the brain cannot process play and stress at the same time.

The Music Train Adventure is based on play and motivates this success spiral:

  • learning through play
success experiences flush the brain with feel-good hormones
